Combination of Medetomidine with Ketamine in Indonesian Local Cats (Felis
domestica).

This study aimed to determine the effectivity of
anesthetics combination of medetomidine with ketamine in local cat (Felis
domestica). Twenty adult cats with body weights ranged 3-5 kg were divided into
five groups consisted of five cats each and each group was given different
treatments. The first group was control group that did not receive anesthesia.
The second group consisted of cats injected with ketamine at a dose of 20 mg/kg
BW (treatment 1). The third group consisted of cats injected with medetomidine
at a dose of 0.15 mg/kg BW (treatment 2). The fourth group consisted of cats injected
with medetomidine at a dose of 0.1 mg/kg BW and shortly thereafter injected
with ketamine at a dose of 10 mg/kg (treatment 3). The anestheticum was
administered by intramuscular (IM) injection. The observed parameters were
onset, duration, respiratory rate, heart rate, and rectal temperature. Results
of this study showed that the anesthetic combination of medetomidine-ketamine
had a better effectivity when compared to ketamine and medetomidine. Anesthetic
combination of medetomidine-ketamine has a faster onset as compared to
medetomidine (about 3 minutes) and ketamine (about 8 minutes). Cats injected
with anesthetic combination of medetomidine-ketamine had a longer duration as
compared to medetomidine (about 78 minutes) and ketamine (about 172 minutes).
Anesthetic combination of medetomidine-ketamine produced a minimal depression
of the physiological conditions such as the functions of breathing, heart
function, and body temperature. Conclusion in this study is the combination of
medetomidine-ketamin can be effectively used as an alternative anesthesia in
local cats.
